Antibiotic Prophylaxis Prior to Dental Procedures

Purpose

To assure at-risk patients are pre-medicated appropriately to minimize risk for joint infection on patients with prosthetic joints and infective endocarditis on patients with specific cardiac issues following dental procedures

Policy & Procedure

  1. Review patient’s medical history prior to treating patient.
  2. Determine the need for antibiotic prophylaxis for patients with prosthetic joints in accordance with the 2015 ADA clinical practice guidelines.

  3. Determine if patient is at risk for infective endocarditis in accordance with the ADA guidelines for Antibiotic Prophylaxis Prior to Dental Procedures.

  4. The dental procedures which antibiotic prophylaxis is required for patients determined to be at risk is followed by the guidelines set by the American Heart Association below.

  5. The regimen for pre-medication with antibiotics determined by the guidelines set by the American Heart Association.
